June Mathis began her career in the performing arts as an actress. She performed in Seattle on four different occasions. In 1908 - 1909, she performed as Margaret "Peggy" Carter in "Brewster's Millions." In 1912-1913, she appeared as Tessie Danforth in "The Fascinating Widow." Also in 1912-1913, she appeared as a character supporting female impersonator, Julian Eltinge. Mathis was actually one of the few female characters that was not a man in drag. Mathis is best known for her work as a screenwriter in Hollywood. She is credited with discovering Rudolph Valentino when he appeared in Mathis's "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" in 1921. Mathis died unexpectedly in 1927.
